Frist And That Other Guy
A few days ago, two top GOP leaders were indicted on charges. Bill Frist, Senate Majority Leader is accused of using insider information in a crooked stock sale. We will start with him first.
This is yet another example of greedy bastardism. Yea, he would have lost some money - but not so much money that he would have to eat Alpo dog food when he retired. He was not going to be wiped out by the loss.
But I guess he thought he would get away with it. After all, look at what his boss gets away with. He is part of the "above the law" club. His own party even tried to change ethics rules, so that congress members under indictments could continue to serve as majority leaders. Would they have wanted to change this rule when the democrats had the majority? And did the democrats try to change the rules when they were in the majority? In both case, the answer is no. At least not that I am aware of.
Bill Frist's excuse is nothing less than lame. Here it is. Citing an email and the draft of a letter to the Senate Ethics Committee, the Wall Street Journal reported that Frist was attempting to sell all HCA stock over two months before the company issued an earnings warning on July 19.
Citing an email and a draft of a letter? Like you can not fake an email. Is that really even evidence? And Bill did NOT sell the stock months before the warning was issued, he sold it on July 13 - during a blackout period. Add to this the little issue of his brother being the CEO of the company. He claims that he never talks to his brother about the family's company. If you believe this, I have some Floirda land for sale at $5 per acre.
The right wing spin machine is already at work with damage control. They are trying to make it sound as if this investigation, conducted by the SEC, is just a democrat plot to topple an ethical man of god. Well, it is not going to work. The facts are clear. The stock was sold during a blackout period where people with insider information could not trade. It does not matter if Frist had planned to sell the stock beore that day - the stock was NOT sold months ago. It was sold days before information was released that the company knew would be bad for stock prices.
And as for his pathetic attempt at an excuse - so what? He had access to insider information. The possibility that he sent an email months ago about selling the stock is not important. Who is to say that the "move to sell" months ago was just an attempt to excuse future insider trading? It seems to me that this is exactly the case.
But Lazy, what about Martha Stewart? What about all the democrats that supposedly supported Martha? She did the same thing.
Nice try at spin. Martha DID go to jail. And she had to pay a fine. Also, as I remember it the whole deal over Martha was not if her greedy ass did not deserve all she got - it was why did they go after Martha and not other, larger, more greedy, corportate criminals. So there.
But this is not the only reason the spin will not work on me. I happen to work for the local government. As a County employee, it was made crystal clear to me that I am to be held to a higher standard. I am prohibited from accepting any gift of any size or value. Even a cup of coffee could count as a gift. If I get in legal trouble, I have to report it to my boss. All the email I get at work is part of the public record. Everything my department does is part of the public record.
Bill Frist, as a member of the US Senate, falls under similar rules. He should be held to the same higher standard as me. Whatever he gets for his lack of ethical judgement he deserves.
and as for his buddy, Tom DeLay - the same thing holds. He laundered money plain and simple. He accepted money from sources that could not contribute money for campaigns, laundered it through the RNC, then distributed an equal amount to campaign funds. He was forced to step down as House Majority Leader. And this picture says it all.
No Mr. Douchbag, you are not the law. You are not above the law. No amount of bullshit is going to help you now. You did what you did, and were indicted for it. You will not see the inside of a jail cell however, your boss Mr. Bush is a lame duck president and will no doubt pardon your ass. So quit scowling at the cameras.
It took the democrat party several decades to self destruct due to extremist policies. Even when Ronnie Ray-Gun was the big cheese, democrats held the congress. And Ronald was a popular presidnet! There were no election scandals around him. His election wins were clear as day. His exit poll data matched the actual results.
The republicans took back congress in 1994. Barely 10 years later and they are facing the very real possibility that they will loose the congress in 2006. The failed war, the extremist policies, blatant acts of unethical behaviour, the presidnet's desire to appoint people whose qualifications take a backseat to political motives - it is all about to hit the fan.
And it was all avoidable. All the republican party had to do was tell the extremists to sit down and shut up, and get more moderate thinkers into positions of power. When the democrats take back congress, lets just hope they DO learn the lesson. Keep the extremists in a cage, and keep that cage locked. Put people in power that are not too liberal and not too consertive. You know, middle of the road thinkers. After all, this is there the majority of the people are.

The saddest part of all of this is that the voters won't learn the lesson and get different people in office.
Here in PA (and I'm sure other states have them) there is a "Clean Sweep" organization that is trying to get all the incumbents out and start fresh.
There was an election scandal with Ronald Reagan. It was called "arms for hostages". Reagan promised America that he would deal harshly with the Iranian terrorists and everybody cheered when the hostages were released his first day of office. "Look, see, they're scared to deal with a strong America," said Mr and Mrs America.
I call that an election scandal.
I forgot about the Iran Hostage, and the later Iran-Contra fiasco.
Also, let us not forget that while we were trading arms to Iran we were giving arms - including chemical weapons - to our good buddy Saddam. In effect, we were fueling both sides of a border dispute war.
Well, being indicted is one thing. A conviction is quite another.
And Bush will say, like he did yesterday on T.V., that these cases are under investigation, so he does not have to say anything!!!
I hate this administration and the horse it rode in on.
I'm not voting for anyone in PA who is currently in office. Period. 'Course I didn't vote for Bush. Didn't do me any good.
It's crazy stuff, that's for sure.
Thanks for coming by Pezland, LI! I understand... Lurking is cool, too.
If the Democrats want to take advantage of the plethora of mis-steps taken by the Republicans they had better start speaking out in a clear, well organized manner. Right now they seem like a bunch of whiney finger-pointers who can't string together a coherent sentence. I hate the current administration but aside from a few good eggs, I don't see leadership coming from the other side. I'm afraid that kind of directionless BS will put the Republicans back in charge again in 06.
