Florida State Song
It seems that the official State Song for Florida needs to be changed. The online petition is here. People are really serious about this. I signed the petition, you can see what I said by going to the site. I am signer number 200 so you can find my comment. And there are serious articles about this subject too! Like this one. Wow.
Now what is the big deal? My Miami readers may not even know there is a State Song. Those outside the State may not know what it is. Well I happen to know. And no, it is NOT "La Cucaracha". Although it could be. There are a whole lot of roaches in Florida. So that would be a perfectly acceptable State Song.
La cucaracha, la cucaracha
Ya no puede caminar
Porque le falta, porque no tiene
Marihuana que fumar.
In English the translation is:
The cockroach, the cockroach
Can not walk anymore
Because it lacks, because it does not have
Marijuana to smoke.
See? A great State Song for Florida. It contains a reference to our State Bird / insect, as well as our favorite plant! By the way, now you know where the term "roach clip" came from.
Anyway, that is not the point. The point is that the current State song is CORRECTLY called "Old Folks At Home". Many think it is "Swanee River", but that is not the original title. It is Old Folks At Home. Written by one Stephen Foster in 1851. Foster is some kind of super genius because he never once visited Florida, yet he somehow knew about all the old folks. LOTS of old people here. Do not believe me? Try to get seated at Denny's at the time the blue plate specials are going on. You have to make reservations 2 weeks in advance.
If you want to see the words to the song, here is the link. Seriously, this is really the State Song. Foster wrote it to be sung by a comedy troop preforming in black face. It was written in slave dialect. In the song the singers are "still longing for de old plantation, and for de old folks at home". Foster lived in Pennsylvania and never even came close to Florida. I think someone warned him about the roaches with no marijuana to smoke.
The original State Song was "Florida, My Florida". This song was adopted by the State in 1913. But this song was very boring. So in 1935 the State changed it to "Old Folks At Home" to honor a yankee who never came anywhere near the South during his life. And since 1935 the State Song has been "Old Folks At Home".
Anyway, Jerry Atric is upset about the song title. "What do you mean old folks at home" Jerry said. "You know, sometimes we do go on vacation. We are not always at home. We also go to the Denny's for the blue plate special and steal all the packets of Sweet N Low".
And Mr. Jerry Atric is right. The old folks are not always at home. Since in FL you can renew your drivers license through the mail and never have to go near a DMV old folks are also driving all over the place. Once a week some lucky business owner gets a free drive through window installed by a well meaning old person driving a 1975 Buick. You know that the brake and gas pedal do look alike.
So I have my own suggestions for the new State Song. Seeing as how the current song was a "comedy" song, I had to really think about my suggestions. So here they are!
Sittin On A Bench In Delray
Bald Spot
Won't Eat Prunes Again
Old Spice Girls (not really a song but what the hell)
Sweatin With The Old People (another non song, but still workable)
Walkin In Dog Mess
Sabado Night Cock Fights (not just in South Florida by the way. But people care more about dog fights so these stories never get any press. And yes this probably happens in North Florida as well)
Genital Warts (only applies to some people in FL - check the medicine cabinet for Valtrex)
I Take A Crap (The Fiber Song)
Hand Job (Strip Club Song)
Sea Of Fat
Sink Or Float
I think that is a good start. I can probably come up with more State Song suggestions, but this is a good working list for now. In fact, this is a pretty impressive list. It may take some time to go through it. Most links are only a few hundred kilobytes.

How about Julie Andrews NEW version of My Favorite Things?
Maalox and nose drops and needles for knitting,
Walkers and handrails
and new dental fittings, Bundles of magazines
tied up in string,
These are a few of my favorite things.
Cadillacs and cataracts, and hearing aids and glasses,
Polident and Fixodent and false teeth in glasses, Pacemakers, golf carts and
porches with swings,
These are a few of my favorite things
It goes on of course.
I think you should just stick with Old Folks at Home, but just change the title to add... or Not at Home, or at Denny's.
I didn't know about Denny's, but one Saturday evening while driving by the one nearby, we saw that kids could eat free. So we stopped and went in (two adults and two kids, ages 6 and 4). While we were sitting there, we suddenly noticed we were the only people in there without white or blue hair. It was really a Twilight Zone moment. Bizarre. Then the 4 y.o., who had a squeaky loud voice, suddenly announced, "I BET THAT GUY HAS OLD MAN BREATH." We don't go back there.
A very perceptive and most excellent post. I'll pass on the cockroach song just because I'm the last person in the USA that disapproves of pot: I'd rather have the cockroaches. But that's just me!
I like the other recommendations but seriously, a Florida song has to be so much more than that. It must include corrupt politicians, chads, taxes, low wages, right-to-work, corporate welfare, and low scholastic test scores. Now somehow work THOSE into a song and you've got a winner!!!
The Lazy,
I had no idea that the Africans were so sensitive. I like Colored Spade from the Hair album.
I can't believe you allow Saur to post on your blog. I told her to stay off my blog or I'd spank her.
Great post, and some cool suggestions. You sure have put some thought into this, haven't you !?!?!
Have a great weekend.
Take care, Meow
I don't smoke pot, but I'll definitely take pot over cockroaches!
Sounds like whoever decided "Old Folks At Home" should be the state anthem was smoking something. They should have stuck with the boring Florida My Florida song. However, I'll vote for "I Take A Crap." That's something that everyone, regardless of race or age, can relate to.
TLP - that is awesome. I think that song could work as the Florida State Song.
Teri - you have to be here to really know what I am talking about. FL is a retirement State.
Nvisible - welcome to my blog! I think you can go back to that Denny's. The staff probably laughed so hard they wet their pants when they heard that comment. The 4 year old is probably a legend at that Denny's.
Saur - of all the things that are out there to worry about, pot is pretty low on my list. Roaches are just part of living in FL. Kind of like how sand in your ass crack is part of living in the Middle East. I think you are right about the State Song. I can not find something that hits on all points.
Spanky - This is a freedom of speech blog. Unless I do not like your comment.
Meow - you have no idea. Really. If you ever come to Florida you will see.
CM - it is true, everyone shits. That would make a great State Song. But I kind of like "Sitting On A Bench In Delray" or "Won't Eat Prunes Again".
I am speechless after reading THAT post :P
Yea I know. I out did myself.
I think the Swanee River in the song was originally the Pee-Dee, or some other Carolina river. For some reason he thought Swanee sounded better, so y'all's stuck with it. By the way, are there long necked waterfowl there ?
The Wikipedia article says it was originally the "Yazoo River" which is a small creek somewhere on the Mississippi River. I do not think anyone knows what the other candidates were. Swannee won, so that is all that really matters.
The rivers in the Carolinas are nicer. There are no rapids in Florida. The mountain rivers are just awesome. Very nice.

I'm the kind of hombre who passions to seek different stuff. Currently I'm constructing my own solar panels. I'm doing it all alone without the help of my staff. I am using the internet as the only path to acheive this. I came across a very amazing website which explains how to create photovoltaic panels and so on. The internet site explains all the steps needed for solar panel construction.
I am not really sure bout how correct the data given there iz. If some guys over here who had experience with these things can have a look and give your feedback in the page it will be grand and I would really value it, because I really like solar panel construction.
Tnx for reading this. U guys are the best.
